The World Heritage Site of Bryggen is all that remains of an ancient wharf on the east side of the Norwegian city of Bergen´s central harbor or Vågen. Bryggen, which means wharf in Norwegian, has been the nerve center of the city for hundreds of years. The characteristic parallel rows of buildings, with their seaward-facing gables, represent a building tradition dating back almost 900 years.
